HANDLING THE HEAT: HOW WE DO SUMMER IN QUEENS PHOTO EXHIBIT
Available through Friday, August 4
Central Library, Main Lobby
89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamaica
This special photo exhibit features visual materials from Queens Public Library Archive’s historic photograph collection. These photographs, drawings, and postcards highlight how city dwellers responded to high summer temperatures in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some of these illustrations remind us how much summer in the city has changed: there are no longer roller coasters or beachfront camps in Rockaway. But some summertime activities remain the same: ice cream trucks still appear, and the boardwalks of Brooklyn and Queens still draw crowds.
