DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning of the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD) Community Learning division, the Assistant Director of the Job & Business Academy (JBA) provides overall supervision and coordination of Job & Business Academy staff who provide job search training, technology training, small business support, entrepreneurship, entry-level job skills training, and contextualized programming (particularly targeting English language learners and young adults).

  • Participates in the hiring process, orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of program staff.
  • Supervises JBA managers, including setting and evaluating measurement criteria for major job responsibilities and strategic initiatives.
  • Responsible for the leadership and supervision of all staff, including the timely and objective feedback of performance, fostering the learning and development of staff.
  • Oversees staff tracking of daily attendance, program participation, success stories and other key outcomes.
  • Oversees the implementation of grants at all JBA sites and assist with implementation of JBA-related grants in other Community Learning divisions, Community Engagement & Outreach, or community libraries.

  • Reports regularly to the Director of Community Learning on grant and customer milestones.
  • Leads tactical and operational decisions regarding JBA services and within the framework of the Library’s strategic plan - creates goals and strategies for JBA services in the short to long-term.
  • Responsible for the overall coordination of JBA workshops and trainings and ensuring that JBA program standards are adhered to.
  • Provides high quality of service to the community, resulting in providing appropriate services and programs based on community needs.
  • Expands JBA program model to various sites; identifies potential vendors; works with Legal Counsel and Purchasing to negotiate, manage, renew and review contracts as required.
  • Collaborates on the integration of JBA programming with ALP and New Americans Program (NAP).
  • Works closely with the Director of Community Learning and Queens Public Library Foundation to apply for various funding opportunities.
  • Manages grant and operating budgets; revises and monitors budgets to meet current library needs and federal guidelines.
  • Oversees program operations and service delivery, including compiling, reviewing, and submitting reports and other documentation that monitor and demonstrate deliverables.
  • Prepares monthly and quarter analyses, reports, projections and evaluations of JBA services to Library Services.
  • Develops, maintains and updates the strategic plan for JBA services system-wide, including strategies for responding to changing demands through the systematic assessment of space, equipment and staffing resources in the community libraries.
  • Oversees the implementation of applicable grants for all JBA sites, manages timelines and ensures that library and grant outcomes are achieved.
  • Builds and maintains productive relationships with public-sector and private-sector employers and non-profit organizations to create career pathways for future talent.
  • Plans and executes overall JBA outreach and marketing.
  • Serves as point person for the development of referral partnerships with organizations providing complementary services to JBA customers.
  • Holds regular meetings with community stakeholders to assess community needs and plan services.
  • Supervises staff outreach within the community and supports staff in distributing materials at community events.
  • Creates and strengthens external partnerships to enter into potential agreements.

  • Participates in outreach activities with special attention paid to continuously developing and refining the library’s entrepreneurship, job search and job skills training services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

**The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as required. Will be required to travel to and from library sites and other locations within the borough of Queens regularly. **

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years demonstrated success in supervising/managing staff and coordinating services or programs is required.
  • Demonstrated three (3) years or more experience providing excellent customer service to large volumes of individuals.
  • Strong organizational and management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Self-motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and demonstrated experience with client data collection software packages, local area networks, and the Internet.
  • Must have a passion for public libraries and providing community-based services.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ALA accredited MLS, MPA, MBA preferred.
  • Experience with managing grant programs and reporting.
  • Experience in job readiness or workforce development.
