Juneteenth: Let the Dress Tell My Story: A Tribute to Anna Murray Douglass
"Anna came and got us," said Lana Turner when describing the calling to tell the story of Frederick Douglass' wife, Anna Murray Douglass. Anna was born a free woman, purchased Frederick’s freedom, and married Frederick in a plum-colored silk dress. Anna's commitment and dedication to her family and the Abolitionist Movement allowed Frederick to do the work that led to the Emancipation Proclamation.
Lana, a Harlem fashion icon and co-founder and chair of the Literary Society Book Discussion Group, collaborated with designer Cassandra Bromfield to recreate Anna’s wedding dress. The dress introduces, honors, and tells the story of this unsung, warrior woman, abolitionist, mother, wife, and activist. The event will be hosted by Shakira Smalls, Director of QPL's Langston Hughes Library.
