Image, Symbol, and Persuasion in Western Art (Virtual Program in Chinese)

English: For centuries, Western artists have translated theology, ideology, and patriotism into forms and images, something one can see, feel, and long remember. Artworks are much more than decoration. They often function as a way of persuasion: teaching the illiterate, stirring devotion, and inspiring hope. They play an important role in preserving history and cultural identity. For this virtual series, we have chosen masterpieces by great artists like Caravaggio, Vermeer, David, and others to explore how and what they tried to convey and convince. Our presenter John Wang holds master's degrees in World Religions from Harvard University and in English Literature from Shanghai International Studies University. He is a contributor to World Journal Weekly and Xinmin Evening Newspaper. Join us on Zoom: https://queenslib.org/4s8YJ9X Meeting ID: 813 2683 0815 Passcode: 078124
