Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom (1865-2026), 161 Years of Strife, Struggle, and Success

The Richie Nick Band, led by Richard Nicholson, performs music to honor June 19, 1865—now known as Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks an important moment in American history. On that day, about two months after the Civil War ended and more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free. This happened when 2,000 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston and General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people were officially freed. This program is supported by a grant from the Nissan Foundation.
