Summary
"Part historical novel, part detective story, The Traitor is set across three turbulent periods in Japanese history: the nineteenth-century Edo-Meiji transition; World War II; and the early 1960s. Abe uses the historical figure of Enomoto Takeaki, a high official in the Edo-period Tokugawa government who manages to retain his power during the Meiji Restoration, to probe the open wound of war responsibility. He asks fundamental questions about the nature of loyalty and betrayal and of the choices that individuals, trapped by social and historical forces beyond their control, must make. Unusually for thetime, Abe intersperses historical documents in the text. Concentrating his tale of betrayal on an earlier time did not save the novel from controversy; when it was originally published in 1964, it was condemned on both the Left (for purportedly justifying Abe's abandonment of the Communist Party, from which he was purged in 1961) and theRight (for purportedly championing moral relativism)"-- Provided bypublisher.
