Meet a Nasa Navigator and Analog Astronaut! (Virtual)
Join us for a virtual conversation with Sarah Elizabeth McCandless from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory! Sarah Elizabeth is a navigation engineer who has contributed to thirteen NASA missions exploring our solar system, including Artemis I and II, the Mars Perseverance rover, and Europa Clipper. As a mission navigator, she ensures NASA knows exactly where a spacecraft is and can accurately predict its trajectory for successful orbital insertions or landings on other planets or celestial bodies. In 2024, she also served as an “analog astronaut,” completing a 45‑day simulated mission to Mars. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

Design Your Habitat Challenge
SciArt Exchange’s Design Your Habitat program invites students to imagine what it takes to build a true community in space, not just a shelter or a spaceship. Teens will consider real challenges like exposure to radiation and microgravity, then design sustainable space habitats that support both survival (air, water, food, exercise, protection) and thriving (art, play, culture, connection). Students will work with NASA space architecture experts and submit entries of 2D visual art or 30–90 second (or less) videos. Participants will receive a certificate of participation, along with tech gifts, and have their artwork featured on QPL materials. Selected designs will receive cash gift cards!

Kids from Queens in Conversation with Real‑Life Astronauts!
Last March, Flushing Library was honored to host a livestream with NASA astronauts currently living and working at the International Space Station. Astronauts were asked questions submitted by kids from our locations across Queens.
Astronauts were asked important space-related questions including:
- Does candy taste sweet in space?
- How long does it take for your body to readjust after going back to Earth?
- If you spill liquid accidentally in microgravity, how do you clean it up?
- If you get sick, is there a doctor on the space station?
- Do you have pets on the International Space Station?
