Ready, set, bank: Financial Literacy & Mobile Banking

Ready, set, bank is a micro learning video series. This four-part workshop series will be incorporated into a six-week financial literacy program where customers will learn to download and navigate finance and banking apps. They will also learn how to deposit checks from their phone, pay bills online, and create budgets. Refreshments will be served. Butterfly Program

Location: Long Island City

Raise caterpillars into butterflies in our library and plant a butterfly garden out front. The caterpillar/butterfly kit and habitat includes a voucher for five painted lady caterpillars to redeem when needed. The caterpillar to butterfly process takes three weeks and kids will be able to observe the metamorphosis over the period. After a few days of having our butterflies, there will be more butterfly crafts; then we will have a butterfly release party.

Celebrate Women's History Month

National Library Week Book Banquet

Join us as Queens Library celebrates National Library Week with our first ever Book Banquet author series. We will be hosting six catered author events with Ting C. Wang, Marina Budhos, Ashley Woodfolk, Zetta Elliott, Ina Yalof, and Javaka Steptoe. The author talks and meals will offer patrons a chance to listen to each author speak about their writing and have a conversation with authors over a meal. All events are free.

Skimming the Surface: An Expressive Movement Workshop with Valerie Green

Valerie Green, artistic director of Dance Entropy, a professional not-for-profit modern dance company based in Queens will lead participants on their own personal journey to help overcome diverse forms of emotional wounds, illness, trauma, or stress to help manage life in this three part series. Through expressive movement exercises, participants work towards finding a physical expression of buried emotional wounds/pain to offer processing, release, and healing.

QEDC: Business Plan Competition

The Queens Economic Development Corporation’s Annual Queens StartUP! Business Plan Competition begins in September 2018. The competition gives entrepreneurs a chance to strengthen their business knowledge, learn about business trends, and gain insights into starting and growing a business while also introducing them to the vast resources available to them at Queens Library. We currently do not have a Friends group at this location, however, kindly contact the Friends Administrator (friends@queenslibrary.org) to find an active Friends group near you. 

Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.
