Screening of "The Great American Read" PBS special

Come join us at the Hillcrest Library for a special encore screening of PBS's "The Great American Read" premiere special. After polling folks around the country, PBS came up with a top 100 list of people's favorite books and asked viewers to read the books and vote on their favorite! Managing Depression

PEARLS by Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Do you know of a senior who seems sad all the time, lost interest in things they used to love, or is having trouble sleeping or loss of appetite? Feeling sad or blue from time to time is normal, but it should fade away after a few days. The Visiting Nurse Services of New York offers free screenings for participation in their new program called PEARLS. You must be 65 or older and live in Queens or Manhattan.

Sewing for Kids

Have you always wanted to learn how to sew? Ms. Ashley will help you learn the basics of sewing by hand! Over a few weeks learn how to thread a needle, sew a running stitch and whip stitch, and use stencils for fabric patterns. Drawing to See: A Creative Aging Program

This is an eight week program where participants will learn a variety of drawing techniques, deepening the experience. For beginners as well as students who wish to broaden their understanding of basic approaches to drawing. The ninth session will be a culminating event consisting of a gallery showing of participants' work. This is a Lifetime Arts Creative Aging program for adults age 50 and up. Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.
