Screening of "Blissville" and a Conversation with Videomaker Hank Linhart

Location: Woodside

Videomaker Hank Linhart has created a study of a remote corner of Queens near Greenpoint, which was formerly known by the remarkable name Blissville. The video explores the character of the town, a residential/industrial neighborhood with a rich mix of ethnicities and many new immigrants. The image of a peaceful town, as the name conjures, gives way to a dynamic and resilient area increasingly threatened by development and gentrification. Q & A will follow the screening.

Asian Mask Art Workshop Taught by Artist Firoz Mahmud

Location: Woodside

This workshop will be on the art of South Asian mask making using paper, which is a popular medium and is seen in cultural festivals in Bangladesh and India featuring the traditional Bengali and South Asian ‘Alpona’ motif. Instructions will be given and demonstrated in the beginning of the class and students will then be allowed to express color and motif their own way. Limited to 15 students.

Kidney Health

We currently do not have a Friends group at this location, however, kindly contact the Friends Administrator (friends@queenslibrary.org) to find an active Friends group near you. 

Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.
