Summer Reading: "Moon Day" - Design a Moon Rover

Location: Rochdale Village
Registration: Not required

Working in small groups, children will build a moon lander that will safely land two “astronauts.”
Using the simple materials provided, children will build a moon lander that can be dropped from a height of 12" without tipping over or bouncing the astronauts out of the vehicle. This program is geared for school-age children.

Summer Reading Club: Dance, Dance Storytime

Location: Rochdale Village
Registration: Not required

Celebrate a universe of stories! Enjoy stories and dancing for children ages birth to 5. Dancing is a great way to bond with your child and burn a little energy at the same time. Here are just a few skills children develop while dancing: balance, coordination, rhythm, social skills, self-esteem, body awareness, listening skills, and gross and fine motor skills. We expect this program to be "out of this world." Siblings are always welcome.

Summer Reading Family Space Cinema: "Space Jam"

Location: Rochdale Village

Visit the Queens Public Library in Rochdale Village to watch the space-themed family movie titled "Space Jam" (1996, PG). This family movie is about Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes being kidnapped by aliens. Bugs challenges the aliens to a game of basketball to settle things--with the help of Michael Jordan.

Raising Awareness for Peripheral Vascular Disease

Did you know there are about three million peripheral vascular disease (PVD) cases a year and the disease affects one in five people over age 50? In Queens alone there is a high prevalence of late-stage PVD, but this can change. During this presentation by Dr. Soma Brahmanandam you will learn about the signs, symptoms, treatment, and more about peripheral vascular disease. Come be empowered and put your health first!

We will be learning about the eight planets in our solar system along with their moons and then creating our own model of the planets. Since we do not want to overlook Pluto, we will also performing a Reader’s Theater of "Pluto is Peeved" based on the picture book by Jacqueline Jules. What would it be like to live on the moon? We’ll share "To The Moon!" by Jodie Shepherd. Then we’ll brainstorm about items that we would need. Participants will design a cardboard version of something they would need or want to have on the moon. You may bring cereal boxes and paper towel rolls, but all materials will be provided. We currently do not have a Friends group at this location, however, kindly contact the Friends Administrator (friends@queenslibrary.org) to find an active Friends group near you. 

Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.
