Summer Reading: Astronaut Helmet

Location: Lefrak City

Children ages 3-5 will enjoy listening to some astronaut-themed stories. Then we will create an astronaut helmet that will encourage pretend play and will engage the tactile senses. Create your helmet and take off into space!

ShapeUp NYC: Whole Body Dance Cardio

Location: Lefrak City
Registration: Not required

ShapeUp NYC instructor Mellissa leads this fitness class, a mixture of dance, aerobics, and toning all wrapped up into an upbeat environment. Wear comfortable clothing, and bring a towel and water bottle. Space is limited. Participation is on first-come, first-served basis.

August Oral History Workshop

Learn how to conduct a great interview to capture the history of your family or neighborhood as a Queens Memory volunteer interviewer. Queens Memory volunteers are working all over the borough to collect residents' stories and photos for safekeeping in the Queens Public Library digital archives. You will learn how to prepare, how to ask good questions, how to make a high-quality recording, and how to submit your completed interview to the library. Thank you for your interest in the Friends of the Library at Queens Library.

Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.

Significant Accomplishments: The Friends hosted 150 guests for their Black History Month Celebration. They co-host the popular Open Forum, a monthly town-hall meeting style meeting that engages the elected officials and community leaders by deviling into some of the biggest issues facing New Yorkers.

Friends Fun Facts: The Friends host Family Fun Night an annual event that honors our top students and celebrates their achievements with games and great food.
