Queens International 2018: Volumes Fel Santos: I of Newtown

Location: Lefrak City
Registration: Not required

Fel Santos: I of Newtown explores sound poetry, music and language through the work of Fel Santos, a poet from Woodside and immigrant from the Philippines. The exhibit is by Paolo Javier and David Mason, from the Philippines and Ireland, respectively. Seven sound pieces and a video speak to intimacy and innovation of language that is unique to multilingual speakers and postcolonial cultures.

Jenga Wednesday

Test your physical skills against peers as you play a classic game of Jenga. Competitors will remove one block at a time from the bottom of a tower constructed of 54 blocks but don't let the tower crumble.

Fel Santos: Sound and Poetry Workshop

Join the artists - poet Paolo Javier and musician David Mason - for a sound and poetry workshop inspired by the sound poetry and elusive identity of Woodside poet Fel Santos. This workshop for adults and youth age 10 and up will demonstrate experimental sound and poetry techniques used in their multimedia art installation and give participants the opportunity to set their own poetry to music. Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.

Significant Accomplishments: The Friends hosted 150 guests for their Black History Month Celebration. They co-host the popular Open Forum, a monthly town-hall meeting style meeting that engages the elected officials and community leaders by deviling into some of the biggest issues facing New Yorkers.

Friends Fun Facts: The Friends host Family Fun Night an annual event that honors our top students and celebrates their achievements with games and great food.
