Zumba: Latin Dance Fitness

Instructor Meiling Schumm uses Latin dance moves to create a workout that helps you lose fat, build muscle, and feel more energized. Dress in exercise clothes, bring a bottle of water, and come early to complete an exercise release form.

Quilling with Phyllis Ger

Participants will make one-of-a-kind jewelry and greeting cards using quilling or paper filigree, an art form dating back to the Renaissance that involves strips of paper that are rolled and glued together to create decorative designs. Bring Your Story: A Film Screening of the 1923 Silent Film "The Ancient Law"

This cine-concert is accompanied by a live original score by violinist Alicia Svigals and pianist/composer and silent film legend Donald Sosin. This is an outstanding example of the creative contribution of Jewish filmmakers in 1920s Germany that draws a complex portrait of the tension between tradition and modernity.

Three-Dimensional Geometric Origami

Location: Kew Gardens Hills
Registration: Registration is not yet open for this program. Please check back closer to the program date.

In this program, origami and paper engineering techniques are used to make different types of three-dimensional geometric shapes such a pentagon bowl and rectangular prisms, which can be used to store things. The pieces the children make are theirs to take home. All materials are provided. Space is limited. Registration is required. This program is for ages 6 to 12.

What You Need to Know about Cancer and Being Your Healthiest and Happiest

Location: Kew Gardens Hills

Come learn key information about protecting your health from cancer and other illnesses, including facts and statistics about cancer, as well as who should be screened and when. We will also focus on strengthening our communication skills to encourage those we love who are at risk to pursue relevant health care. Participants will have a chance to ask licensed health professionals important health questions in an open and encouraging environment.

Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.

Significant Accomplishments: The Friends has been existence for 15 years. They have provided funds to purchase books and furniture. They have hosted numerous programs for children and adults that include chair yoga, Museum of Modern Art slide presentations and lecture series.

Friends Fun Facts: The Friends continue to meet regularly in their temporary home while their brand new library is being built and scheduled to open in 2015.
