Zumba: Latin Dance Fitness

Instructor Meiling Schumm uses Latin dance moves to create a workout that helps you lose fat, build muscle, and feel more energized. Dress in exercise clothes, bring a bottle of water, and come early to complete an exercise release form. Preregistration is required.

ESOL Technology Class

The ESOL Technology Program will prepare English language learners to use various computer software programs in order to improve their computer and English skills. Students will use Microsoft Office to draft electronic documents and spreadsheets with transferrable skills related to the job search process. This program is funded by NYC Council Member Rory Lancman.

Managing Depression

PEARLS by Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Do you know of a senior who seems sad all the time, lost interest in things they used to love, or is having trouble sleeping or loss of appetite? Feeling sad or blue from time to time is normal, but it should fade away after a few days. The Visiting Nurse Services of New York offers free screenings for participation in their new program called PEARLS. You must be 65 or older and live in Queens or Manhattan.

Fashion and Design

Google Computer Science First teaches tweens about computer science and programming. They will especially learn about computer coding for free. Our theme this year is Fashion and Design. Friends Chapters enrich community life around their community library. You will meet other people who care, and you will benefit your neighborhood by:

• Increasing community awareness and library use.
• Acting as liaisons between community and your library.
• Sponsoring programs that enhance the cultural life of your community.

As a Friend, you will:

• Educate your community about Queens Library’s vital services.
• Contribute your time towards programs and special activities at your library.
• Advocate for better library service to your own community through outreach, legislative contact, and fundraising.

Significant Accomplishments: The Friends has been existence for 15 years. They have provided funds to purchase books and furniture. They have hosted numerous programs for children and adults that include chair yoga, Museum of Modern Art slide presentations and lecture series.

Friends Fun Facts: The Friends continue to meet regularly in their temporary home while their brand new library is being built and scheduled to open in 2015.
