Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concerts: Ljova and the Kontraband
Ljova and the Kontraband plays a genre-smashing blend of music influenced by classical, klezmer, tango and gypsy jazz. The group is led by Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, a Moscow-born, New York-based violist and composer who has worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Kronos Quartet, Osvaldo Golijov and Jay Z.  With soulful vocals by Inna Barmash, his Lithuanian-born wife, and accordion, bass and percussion backing, Ljova and the Kontraband serve up a high-energy blend of folksy melodicism and jagged Central and Eastern European rhythms.
