Mario the Magician
Magic and Music
He wowed children and adults alike at last year’s Lincoln Center Local, and now he’s back! Inspired by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Vaudeville-style theatre, get ready for a one-of-a-kind, inventive and lively performance with Mario the Magician. The talent, creativity and many years of professional performance experience are clearly on display in this show that is at once ridiculously silly and meticulously crafted. Audience members will watch Mario perform a variety of magic tricks, fostering ingenuity and encouraging kids to discover their own artistic spirit in a fun, accessible way. Mario’s performance will be accompanied by his Sleight of Hand Band, a three piece jazz combo, featuring celebrated bassist Chris Donohue. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 3 and up.

 

Artist Bio
Mario Marchese is a full-time magician who specializes in performing for children. He has been featured in Small Magazine, the New York Post, MAGIC Magazine, the Journal News, the White Plains Times, the Nyack Patch, and recommended by Time Out New York Kids magazine, The New York Times, CBS News, NY1 and more! He has published a book of children's magic card tricks for Barnes & Noble. Ballets with a Twist
Cocktail Hour
Cocktail Hour is a clever, sumptuous suite, which promises to seduce virgin and seasoned audiences alike. This collection of dances celebrates cocktail culture with an irreverent, pop sensibility. The New York Times has called it “witty and fantastic.” Ballets with a Twist serves up original choreography by Marilyn Klaus, music by the Grammy-nominated Stephen Gaboury, and costume design by Catherine Zehr. The program opens with a performance of “Return to Normalcy” which Dance Magazine compared to “Twyla Tharp’s wonderfully convoluted madcap dances for the Joffrey and ABT.” Performances include a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 10 and up, with parental guidance.

 

Artist Bio
New York City’s next-generation dance company, Ballets with a Twist, is taking the states by storm with its glamorous mix of critically-acclaimed choreography, original music, and exquisite costume design. Under the direction of celebrated dance-maker Marilyn Klaus, the company is inventing a new genre of artistic entertainment, serving up classical ballet with an irreverent pop sensibility. In the words of The Huffington Post, “Klaus blasts the boundaries between high art and entertainment. Bodoma Garifuna Band
West-African Customs via Music
Bronx based Bodoma Garifuna Band celebrates their ancestral West African customs through music. Their act is a hybrid sound that flows through the echo of a three piece drum ensemble, plus various other percussions, and led by melodic and dynamic vocals which can be described as a communal call-and-response that mimics sacred invocations of spirits. The Garifuna heritage is unique in almost every sense, as slavery plays little-to-no part in the history of its people. This allowed them not only to keep their customs pristine, but to develop them further. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. Suggested for audiences ages 10 and up.

 

Artist Bio
Carlos Norales, also known as Bodoma, was born and raised in Honduras, Central America. He is a musical ambassador of traditional Garifuna culture, and delivers a highly charged, vibrant and colorful performance. As a skilled singer and drummer, he actively seeks to engage youth and all audiences alike, in his cultures history. Villalobos Brothers
Redefining Latin Music
Masterfully blending the indigenous rhythms and melodies of their native Veracruz, Mexico with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music, the Villalobos Brothers deliver an intoxicating brew of musical brilliance, cadence and virtuosity that awakens the senses as it redefines the notions behind Latin music. The Villalobos Brothers have been acclaimed as one of today’s leading World Music and Classical Fusion ensembles. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 10 and up.

 

Artist Bio
The Villalobos Brothers were born and raised in Xalapa, Mexico. They took up the violin as children and soon learned to sing and play other instruments, including guitar and piano. They eventually moved on to specialize in classical violin and composition, and developed their own style of playing, called “Fast-Chatting Violin” consisting in a rapid succession of notes and percussive sounds. They have performed at the Latin Grammy Awards, Carnegie Hall, the Guggenheim Museum, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other prestigious and historic venues. La Piccola Opera
Carmen (abridged)
La Piccola Opera, or opera in miniature, delivers the world’s most multilayered art form, in an abridged version of Carmen. The performance is presented in under an hour using glorious music, powerful voices, drama, theater, action, dance, humor, and emotion. The opera is sung in the original French and Italian and includes English narration that allows the audience to follow the story line and understand how music can be used to convey emotion, character and plot. If you have never experienced opera, La Piccola Opera will open your ears, eyes, and your heart. Performances include a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 7 and up.

 

Artist Bio  
Marjorie Kahn, noted soprano and La Piccola Opera’s (LPO) artist director, conceived the idea of producing an abridged opera of her own after auditioning for the title role of Peter Brooks’ Carmen at Lincoln Center in 2000.  Kahn produced and starred in her version of Carmen with English narration at Danny’s Skylight Room in New York City, and La Piccola Opera was born. LPO comprises a talented cast of four professional singers and a piano accompanist. LPO has performed at New York’s famous Hudson Theatre, as well as other venues such as Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium, New York’s Aaron Davis Hall and Greenwich Library’s Concert Series.  For more information about La Piccola Opera, please visit the opera's website.

 

Zikrayat
Arabic Music and Dance around the Mediterranean
Zikrayat, Arabic for “memories”, performs music and dance from Egypt and the Greater Arab World, with a focus on the Egyptian musical cinema of the 1940’s-60’s. The performance traces the common thread of music across the Mediterranean region from Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Greece, to Tunisia, and beyond!  Alternating vocal and instrumental numbers with solo and group dance numbers, Zikrayat’s mission is to highlight the diversity of Arab culture for mainstream Western audiences in an authentic, yet entertaining contemporary representation. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 10 and up.

Zikrayat's master performers are among the finest Arab musicians and dancers in the United States, including Mariyah, Dameshe, Sami Abu Shumays, Faisal Zedan, Zafer Tawil, Rami ElAasser, and Apostolos Sideris. The ensemble has performed at Lincoln Center out-of-doors, Joe's Pub, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Lowell and American Folk Festivals, GlobalFEST, Alwan for the Arts, and many more. Classical Jam
From the Streets to the Concert Hall
Classical Jam (CJ) brings five of the most highly demanded soloists and chamber musicians together to present an engaging and lively performance that delights both new and established classical music listeners. CJ and its wide ranging repertoire weave their way through a show complete with thought provoking concert themes, traditional classical works, and their own arrangements from Gershwin to Piazzolla. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 7 and up.

 

Artist Bio
Classical Jam members are: Jennifer Choi (violin), Cyrus Beroukhim (viola), Wendy Law (cello), Marco Granados (flute), and Justin Hines (percussion). The group  performs regularly with “Musicians from Marlboro,” Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Ethel. Individually, they have appeared as soloists with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Singapore Symphony, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony and the Virginia Symphony, among others. Artist Bio
Surati, a not-for-profit performing arts organization committed to promoting Indian culture and arts, is the recipient of grants and awards from the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Surati Founder-Artistic Director Rimli Roy and the Surati team have performed throughout India and the U.S. Most notable performances include: World Financial Center Winter Garden, Jacob K. Infinite Rhythm
Musical Communication, Rhythm and Percussion
“Flight of the Bumble Bee” buzzes its speedy course along the keys of the marimba as audiences get a lesson in human communication through skillful percussion displays. Columbia recording artist Brian Slawson and his talented rhythm section masters, Pat Bautz (Three Dog Night) and Steve Chapin (The Chapin Brothers), take to the stage for vibrant demonstration of the oldest form of communication—percussive rhythm. From behind his marimba, this dynamic composer leads his musical ensemble through the ages telling tales through music and rhythm. Audiences witness in awe the speed and dexterity as mallets strike up explosive sounds and unforgettable tunes. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 5 and up.

 

Artist Bio
Brian Slawson is a critically acclaimed percussionist, arranger and composer who attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. His work experience traverses many areas of the entertainment industry. He has performed with Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, John Cage, Robert Shaw, Bernard Haitink and opera great Jessye Norman. In addition, he has toured the U.S. and Europe with Broadway productions, is the voice of Gusto the Bulldog in Warner Brothers’ Music Expressions, and has appeared on many television and radio shows. Teri Dale Hansen
Fairy Tales of Broadway
Princesses, heroes, and villains aren’t only found in storybooks…they are also found on Broadway! Many familiar children’s stories have been produced as award-winning Broadway musicals including Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and Shrek.  Just completing an 8 year run of performances with Lincoln Center’s Meet the Artist School Series, audience favorite Teri Dale Hansen hits the road to bring the fairy tales of Broadway to Queens Library for some family fun. Children and parents participate and sing along to cherished songs, create a five-minute fairy tale, and move to the music in this fairy tale exploration. Performance includes a Q&A with the artists. This program is suggested for audiences ages 3 and up.

 

Artist Bio
From Opera to Broadway, Teri Dale Hansen has received International recognition for her crossover abilities as a singing actress. She made her Broadway debut in THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE and starred in London's West End as "Magnolia" in Hal Prince's Tony award winning production of SHOW BOAT. Ms. Hansen has concertized with Marvin Hamlisch nationwide, including the Boston Pops, and starred in the Broadway national tours of THE MUSIC MAN, CAMELOT, SHOW BOAT and THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
