Before Hurricane Sandy, more than 40,000 cardholders made 640,000 visits to Queens Library’s seven libraries in the Rockaways. The storm severely impacted almost everyone who lived or worked in these neighborhoods, and caused $10 million of damage to our libraries and books.
After the storm, Queens Library was the first stop for people in need of information, disaster aid and internet access. Our Far Rockaway Community Library and mobile libraries served as emergency assistance centers, and in that first week, we helped 8,300 people!
Today, families in the Rockaways still urgently need Queens Library’s information, career and educational services, access to the internet, and homework help for their children during out-of-school time.
