A Select List of Local Newspapers in International Languages
Introduction
Queens is considered the most ethnically diverse place in the nation with more than 160 nationalities living together. One in three Queens residents hails from another country and nearly half of the borough's residents speak a language other than English at home.
Living in such a diverse environment, many Queens residents, especially new arrivals, have a strong desire to read in their native languages either due to their language barrier or cultural preference. Very often, the library is the only place for them to satisfy their reading needs. In addition to books, newspapers are an essential way for the immigrants to seek information. Requests for ethnic newspapers are already heard in many branches throughout the Borough.
In order to provide further information and help to the various ethnic groups of Queens, the New Americans Program has compiled and edited this list of local newspapers in international languages, selecting the most popular newspapers published in the Greater New York metropolitan area. Since NAP does not generally subscribe to local newspapers for the branches, this list can serve as a quick and easy-to-read reference tool for branches that would like to subscribe to any of them using their own budget. The list can also be useful in assisting customers who are looking for local newspapers in their native languages.
