Make Stylish Handbags from Recycled Jeans with Bengali Artist Shahnaz Begum

Location: South Jamaica
Registration: Not required

In this sewing project, participants will learn how to recycle pairs of old jeans into stylish purses, with the option of adding fabric trims and lace. Basic sewing techniques will be reviewed. Jeans, needle, thread and scissors will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 20 participants. Fabric trims, lace and large beads can be brought to personalize each bag.

Cultural Programs

New Americans Program offers Cultural Arts programs celebrating the arts and literature of ethnic groups in Queens communities. Programs are presented in the Central Library and in community libraries. Offerings include music, dance, drama performances, bilingual poetry and storytelling. Cultural arts programs are bilingual in English and the language of the culture being showcased.

Coping Skills

New Americans Program offers Copings Skills workshops: lectures and workshops to help immigrants adjust to life in America presented in selected community libraries as well as the Central Library. Programs are presented in English and in the major immigrant languages of Queens by lawyers, teachers, counselors and other professionals. Topics presented include immigration law, becoming a citizen, tenants rights, career planning, starting a business, parenting, education and health.
