The Civil Rights Movement

Teens of all backgrounds are invited to watch a short video series on the civil rights movement from its early years to the election of President Obama. The program will incorporate video clips and end with a Jeopardy quiz on our overhead monitor. Power to teens!

African-American History Jeopardy

One of Flushing's most popular teen events is our regular Jeopardy game, on overhead monitor with buzzers and bells. February's game will incorporate trivia related to African-American history and civil rights into our regular Jeopardy mix.

Cultural Programs

New Americans Program offers Cultural Arts programs celebrating the arts and literature of ethnic groups in Queens communities. Programs are presented in the Central Library and in community libraries. Offerings include music, dance, drama performances, bilingual poetry and storytelling. Cultural arts programs are bilingual in English and the language of the culture being showcased.


Coping Skills

New Americans Program offers Copings Skills workshops: lectures and workshops to help immigrants adjust to life in America presented in selected community libraries as well as the Central Library. Programs are presented in English and in the major immigrant languages of Queens by lawyers, teachers, counselors and other professionals. Topics presented include immigration law, becoming a citizen, tenants rights, career planning, starting a business, parenting, education and health.
