Contemporary Brazilian Jazz with Quarteto Moderno

Quarteto Moderno is a contemporary Brazilian jazz ensemble that features acclaimed guitarist, vocalist and composer Richard Boukas. The group performs primary Brazilian genres including samba, choro, baião, frevo, maracatu, marcha and guarânia. The repertoire ranges from Boukas’s original compositions to interpretations of legendary Brazilian composers from Minas Gerais, including Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Sérgio Santos.

Author Morshed Alam Reads from "Grass Roots Politics" (in Bengali)

In his first book, an immigrant’s memoir of a life devoted to political activism and a call to others to take seriously the responsibility that democracy demands of its citizens, Morshed Alam documents decades of commitment to the representation of immigrants in the United States and urging others to move beyond cultural alienation towards collective power. Books will be available for sale and signing and light snacks will be served.

Cultural Programs

New Americans Program offers Cultural Arts programs celebrating the arts and literature of ethnic groups in Queens communities. Programs are presented in the Central Library and in community libraries. Offerings include music, dance, drama performances, bilingual poetry and storytelling. Cultural arts programs are bilingual in English and the language of the culture being showcased.


Coping Skills

New Americans Program offers Copings Skills workshops: lectures and workshops to help immigrants adjust to life in America presented in selected community libraries as well as the Central Library. Programs are presented in English and in the major immigrant languages of Queens by lawyers, teachers, counselors and other professionals. Topics presented include immigration law, becoming a citizen, tenants rights, career planning, starting a business, parenting, education and health.
