Director of Flushing

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Director of the Flushing Library leads the daily operations of the Flushing Library with latitude for independent action and decision-making. This is a highly visible position in a prominent flagship facility.

  • Communicates and reinforces Queens Library’s mission, values and strategic direction and develops and administers quality programs and services that meet the diverse needs of Flushing communities.
  • Formulates long-term and short-term plans, which actively realize system-wide goals and objectives.
  • Supervises, mentors and manages the performance of staff to deliver high quality programs and services that meet Queens Library’s mission.
  • Expands collection development, programming, and outreach efforts to maximize circulation.
  • Projects and manages budgets to allocate resources to ensure maximum return on investment and to achieve quality customer service.
  • Leads staff in developing partnerships with local organizations, including community boards and civic associations to build public support for the Flushing Library and Queens Library.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess an ALA-accredited MLS degree, NY State Librarian Certificate and a minimum of five years library management experience, with at least two years experience managing a community library or major division within a library system.
  • Requires significant experience managing and supervising all levels of staff.  
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must have the ability to work well with diverse populations. Must have demonstrated ability to apply principles of leadership; analyze and interpret business information and formulate business strategies and plans.
  • Must problem solve at an advanced business level.
  • Knowledge of current theory, trends, practice and policy in the field of librarianship required. Must have demonstrated knowledge of library policies and procedures.
