Technical Support Aide

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Technical Support Aide (TSA) is responsible for the physical processing, database searching, record modification and digitization of electronic and physical collections with an emphasis on international language collections.

  • Digitizes materials in a variety of formats including photographs, maps, manuscripts, rare books, and other materials as needed. Follows Queens Library’s best practices for digital preservation (file naming, storage protocol and documentation).
  • Takes existing records and modifies them as well as copy cataloging in English and foreign language materials. Performs transliteration as needed.
  • Conducts search of metadata records in Queens Library’s database, OCLC, and other related databases for electronic and print materials.
  • Prepares work forms for distribution to librarians for the creation of original catalog records.
  • Assists in processing Audio Visual materials for circulation. Responsible for item creation and address labels for DVDs and CDs. Responsible for shipping and handling processing for foreign language materials.
  • Serves on TSA team to fulfill Community Library requests. Interfaces with Collection Development and Acquisitions staff on foreign language materials.
  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma, or High School Equivalency required. Additional technology education preferred.
  • Experience in a library setting preferred.
  • Experience working in a technical capacity.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word) and with database software.  Ability to learn new digitization and preservation technology. Experience with overhead scanner, book scanner, flatbed scanner preferred.
  • Ability to perform independently, be self-motivated, adapt to constant change, and juggle multiple tasks with a positive attitude.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work well as a team member with the willingness to adapt to new technologies and processes.
  • Fluency with languages spoken in Queens preferred.
