Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

** This is a temporary grant-funded position through 6/30/2019. **

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher UPK will provide high quality and comprehensive child development instruction to children enrolled in the Queens Library UPK program. This position will work in a co-teaching classroom and will report directly to the Coordinator of Early Learning.  The Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher will maintain a relationship with Parents/Guardians to communicate student progress reports. Responsibilities include day-to-day classroom direction and instruction to Teacher’s Assistant and substitute Teacher’s when needed.

  • Develops engaging lessons based on early childhood program curriculum for children 4 and 5 years of age.
  • Plans and implements all classroom activities and individualized plans in accordance with the program curriculum and UPK Performance Standards with maximum involvement of the Teacher’s Assistant.
  • Informs parents of curriculum by preparing and submitting lesson plans; posting schedules and curriculum outlines.
  • Encourages students’ participation by providing interactive activities.
  • Plans and provides home-teaching activities to families according to established full day schedules and maintains accurate up-to-date records of student attendance and progress.
  • Encourages parent involvement with the development and implementation of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) when necessary. 
  • Meets with parent/guardian twice a year to discuss the child’s IEP and developmental progress. Maintains IEP checklist monthly.
  • Provides a welcoming environment and encourage parent’s involvement in the students’ development using Library resources.
  • Ensures classrooms are neat and tidy after program on a daily basis.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the safe and healthy conditions in the classroom.
  • Supervises meal times and assist with the distribution and cleanup of snacks.
  • Sets behavioral standards with other staff members and clearly defines them to children and adults.
  • Writes reports and communicate with parents about children’s progress.
  • Maintains subjective classroom records for each child monthly and prepares developmental summaries of each child at year-end.
  • Supports the completion of assessments working with the Coordinator of Early Learning and provides feedback on the program.
  • Submits timely record keeping including monthly reports and all other reports as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required.

KEY COMPETENCIES

The Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher must consistently demonstrate the following competencies when performing the above responsibilities, including but not limited to: initiative, flexibility in approaching daily responsibilities, cooperative teamwork, and impacting and influencing children and families in Queens Library communities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field of study required.
  • New York State Education Department teacher certificate in Early Childhood (Birth – Grade 2), (n-6), (Pre-K-6) or a teaching license or certificate for Students with Disabilities (Birth – Grade 2) required.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a lead teacher in a Pre-K classroom required.
  • CPR and First Aid certificates required.
  • Certificate in Infection Control and Prevention (including Blood borne Pathogen training) required.
  • Current Medical and immunization record required.
  • Cleared background checks and fingerprints indicating clearance to work with children required.
  • Food Handling certificate preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience supervising staff is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate must be a dynamic individual that demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) and has a positive and enthusiastic approach to working with children. 
  • Must be proficient MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Must have experience and knowledge of basic social media including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Vine, Pinterest etc.
