Pre-Kindergarten Teacher’s Assistant

** This is a temporary grant funded position through 6/30/2018. **

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Pre-Kindergarten Teacher’s Assistant supports the Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher in the classroom in accordance with NYC’s program performance standards. This position will support the activities, programs and curriculum as planned by the Teacher.  

  • Assists the Teacher with delivering an early childhood program curriculum for children 4 and 5 years of age.
  • Assists with all classroom activities and individualized plans in accordance with the program curriculum and Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Performance Standards.
  • Works alongside the teacher to carry out special classroom activities, outings, field trips, and special events.
  • Provides assistance and follows up with parents regarding home-teaching activities and maintains accurate up-to-date records of student attendance.
  • Welcomes and encourages parents to come to the library and visit the classroom at all times.
  • Ensures classrooms are neat and tidy after program on a daily basis. Helps children stay within their limits in a way that enhances learning and development.
  • Performs daily safety routines by monitoring and securing access points to the designated UPK areas within the library.
  • Assists with the preparation and supervision of various activities within the classroom: monitors and supervises classroom activities, supervises outdoor activities, prepares and maintains supplies for classroom activities, helps provide a smooth transition from one activity to another, performs clerical work, classroom clean-up, assists with meal service and clean up, and assists students with toileting and basic hygiene care. 
  • Works in cooperation with other staff, volunteers, and outside agencies to present a united effort in providing supportive services as necessary (coordinates paperwork and provides administrative assistance when necessary).
  • Supports the completion of assessments as required by Queens Library and other entities involved in the UPK program.
  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (G.E.D/H.S.E) required.
  • A valid Level I or higher NYS Teaching Assistant certification required.
  • Must complete the mandatory 2 hours of training in child abuse and maltreatment identification, reporting, and prevention as well as the requirements of applicable statutes and regulations.
  • Must complete 15 hours of training every 24 months, including the mandatory child abuse prevention and other subjects related to child health, safety, and early childhood development (Child Care Article 47 providers only).
  • First Aid and CPR certificates and mandated reporting training required.
  • Cleared background check and fingerprints indicating to work with children required.
  • Bilingual (written and oral) in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, or French is a plus.
  • Must be proficient with internet/computer skills, including: MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
