The New American Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC provides mentoring services to address the unique needs of youth from immigrant families who may be facing the pressures of adjusting to a new culture, language, and customs. The friendship of a caring, adult mentor has proven to help immigrant youth overcome obstacles of racism, prejudice, and feelings of isolation and loneliness. In this program, trained and supervised mentors, who are adults 21 years or older, are matched with a child for a minimum commitment of one year. Youth and their mentors spend 4-6 hours every other week participating in low-cost recreational, educational, and cultural activities.
