St. Albans provides nursing home care for veterans and certain qualifying dependents needing long-term health care. "Individualized personal care is provided around the clock for residents at St. Albans. Physical, occupational and speech therapy are offered to residents to help them remain active and alert in surroundings that are designed to provide a homelike environment." There are "several special care units, including a 35-bed unit for those with Alzheimer's disease and similar dementias. A 15-bed ventilator unit is available to treat those with chronic respiratory disorders."

•The applicant must have entered active duty from the State of New York or be a New York State resident for one year prior to application for admission.
•The veteran must also have had an honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces.
•The veteran must have had at least thirty (30) days of active service.
•A veteran accompanied by their spouse both of whom require skilled nursing care will receive the highest priority for admission followed by "wartime" veterans; "non-wartime" veterans, spouses and unremarried surviving spouses, and then Gold Star mothers and fathers.

Upon admission, the unit social worker will greet you and your loved one at the door and will assist you in getting acquainted with the unit, staff and facility. Social workers are available to meet with you Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM until 4:00PM, and are available evenings or weekends when necessary.
