You can volunteer as a...
Literacy Tutor
- Work with adults whose levels range from non-readers to mid-level to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills
- Meet with small groups of students for at least three hours a week at a center
- Plan lessons to connect learning to life using real-life materials such as checks, job applications and product labels
- Provide sessions that vary in content and technique, utilizing professional support, training and resources
- Incorporate technology into group activities and projects for students to develop computer literacy skills
- Participate in additional learning activities and projects
ESOL Facilitator
- Help high-beginning to intermediate level English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) practice their speaking and listening skills
- Meet with groups of up to ten students for at least one ninety-minute conversation session a week
- Plan lessons to connect learning to life using everyday materials
- Provide sessions that vary in content and technique, utilizing professional support, training and resources
- Incorporate technology into group activities and projects for students to develop computer literacy skills
- Participate in additional learning activities and projects
Requirements to Become a Volunteer
- Have a high school diploma or higher
- Adhere to the program philosophy
- Attend all required volunteer training
- Commit at least three months to the program
- Speak English fluently
- Have patience, flexibility, and desire to help
