Literacy Tutor

• Work with adults whose levels range from non-readers to mid-level to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills
• Meet with small groups of students for at least three hours a week at a center
• Plan lessons to connect learning to life using real-life materials such as checks, job applications and product labels
• Provide sessions that vary in content and technique, utilizing professional support, training and resources
• Incorporate technology into group activities and projects for students to develop computer literacy skills
• Participate in additional learning activities and projects

ESOL Facilitator

• Help high-beginning to intermediate level English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) practice their speaking and listening skills
• Meet with groups of up to ten students for at least one ninety-minute conversation session a week
• Plan lessons to connect learning to life using everyday materials
• Provide sessions that vary in content and technique, utilizing professional support, training and resources
• Incorporate technology into group activities and projects for students to develop computer literacy skills
• Participate in additional learning activities and projects

Requirements to Become a Volunteer

• Have a high school diploma or higher
• Adhere to the program philosophy
• Attend all required volunteer training
• Commit at least three months to the program
• Speak English fluently
• Have patience, flexibility, and desire to help
