Bank of America Invests Again in Queens Library

2017-06-29

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation last month awarded Queens Library a $50,000 grant for its Job and Business Academy, which provides skills training and career advancement opportunities to job seekers, aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners.

The funding will be applied to JBA’s home health aide and security guard training courses and OSHA construction certification program, all three of which are growing sectors that offer an entry point to jobs that pay above the minimum wage. The programs will be offered at the Library’s branches in South Jamaica, Long Island City and Far Rockaway, and are expected to draw 750 people.

“Over the past 10 years, the Bank of America has been a phenomenal supporter of Queens Library’s work and mission to provide learning opportunities that can transform and improve people’s lives,” said Queens Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott. “This new award will enable the Library to help even more people in our communities to find meaningful jobs and economic security. “

The security guard training program consists of an eight-hour licensing course, and for those who qualify, a subsequent 16 hours of instruction focused on specifics of security jobs in office, retail and health care. OSHA certification training is offered in 10-hour and 30-hour modules, and the home health aide training is a three-week, full-time course.

“Our goal across the United States, and here in New York City, is to help advance economic mobility in order to build thriving communities,” said Bank of America Senior Vice President and Community Relations Manager Nereida S. Andino. “We are proud to support local nonprofits, like Queens Library, who are on the forefront of meeting New Yorkers at their most critical point and helping them onto a path to long-term success.”
