Sound Puzzle

Kids Discovery - Sounds

Have you ever done a puzzle with your ears? This exhibit features eight puzzles with pieces that make different, short sounds. Your challenge: Fit the pieces of a puzzle together in the right order so the combined sounds make a familiar noise. To do this, listen very carefully to each piece through the headphones, and use your fingertip to drag the piece to where you think it should go in the puzzle.

These puzzles are in the exhibit: 1) a lawnmower; 2) a soda can being popped open and poured; 3) a flushing toilet; 4) the sound of traffic; 5) a plane taking off; 6) an ambulance; 7) a piano being played up and down the keyboard; and 8) the sound of drums and cymbals.

If you think putting sounds in the correct order is easy, guess again! Even though the puzzles make familiar, everyday noises, it's not so simple when you have to really listen and think about an arrangement that makes sense. You may have to listen to some pieces over and over. It's like playing "Concentration" with sounds!

When you finish a puzzle, press "Play" on the touch screen to hear the whole group of sounds. If you have to, you can change the order of the pieces. Check yourself by pressing the "Show the Correct Order" button. If a piece isn't in the right place, it will move itself back into the correct order. Then press "Play" again to hear the puzzle from start to finish. Want to try another? Press "Next Puzzle" and put your hearing and puzzle talents to the test again!
