Kids Discovery Mirror

Kids Discovery - Mirror

What do you usually see when you look in a mirror? In this exhibit, forget your face: Pay attention to your hand! There are two challenges here. The first is to write your name and draw pictures on a drawing board; the second is to find your way through a maze. Can you do these activities while you’re looking in the mirror—and not peeking at your fingers? Have fun with this: Let the mirror guide you. Don’t look under or over the black shield!

Notice that directions like up and down or left and right seem different when you can actually see what your hand is doing and when you use only a mirror to guide the movements of your hand. How do these directions seem to change? What does this help you understand about the way things look in a mirror? Try these activities: Hold a book up to a mirror. What do you see? Next, what do you think will happen if you write or draw something backward on a piece of paper and then hold your paper up to a mirror? Who knew mirrors could be so tricky!
