The girls of Atomic City

Very engaging tale of the efforts at Oak Ridge TN to employ tens of thousands of people, mostly women, to create the materials for the first atomic bombs while keeping it all top secret. The story is told through the eyes of more than a dozen women who were there for jobs ranging from nurse to janitor, never knowing anything about what was going on at this built-overnight community and laboratory/factory. The story also includes the women scientists who were critical in the discovery of fission, but who were never fully credited due to their sex and/or religion. The whole scenario turned into an experiment not only in atomic science but also sociology, psychology and anthropology. Good reading.
