Programs and Services For Older Adults

Print and Audio Books by Mail

Many free (and nominal charge) services that provide books on tape, large print and Braille by mail. The list includes general, academic and religious sources.

Stay Well Exercise Program For Older Adult

The Stay Well program introduces participants, ages 60 and older, to special exercises, relaxation techniques and the benefits of good nutrition. This program is sponsored by the New York City Department for the Aging and is held, on a regular basis, at the Central Library, Flushing, and East Elmhurst.

CCTVs (Closed Circuit Televisions)

CCTVs enlarge reading materials, documents, and photos up to 100 times and display the image on a television screen in black and white or color.

CCTVs are located at:

  • Central Library in the Job Information Center and in Youth Services
  • Flushing Internation Resource Center
and in the following branches:

TTY Loan Program

A telecommunication device for the hearing impaired. This telephone/keyboard hybrid sends keyed messages over phone lines to a partner device where they are displayed and/or printed. This program is offered by Queens Borough Public Library in partnership with Bell Atlantic.

If you have a Queens Borough Public Library card you can borrow a TTY for up to three weeks by visiting one of the following libraries:

Bi-Folkal Kit Demonstrations

Bi-Folkal Productions is a non-profit company formed by librarians seeking new ways to encourage creative programming within older adult and mixed-age groups. By facilitating interaction and conversation, Bi-Folkal kits have proven to be an effective recreation therapy took in nursing homes, adult homes, adult day care centers, and senior centers, as well as some home care environments.

Volunteer Readers' Service

Volunteer readers are available to record spoken cassettes of print materials to supplement the other Talking Books services. Contact Special Services at 718-990-0746.
