"Ni Hao" (Chinese language):

"Ni Hao" means "greetings" in Chinese and was the name selected for the library's Chinese language collection. The Ni Hao program is the largest public library collection development program in the country for general Chinese readers. The emphasis is on publications of modern literature by best-selling authors from the 1920s through the present. In addition to adult and children's books, all Ni Hao collections have magazines, newspapers, CDs, and videotapes. In addition, Douglaston, Flushing, Hillcrest, Maspeth, Poppenhusen and Ridgewood have CD-ROMs. Collections are balanced in terms of place of publication (Taiwan, China and Hong Kong), reading level, and subject matter. We also consider the preferences and needs of Mandarin and Cantonese speakers in selecting non-print materials. The Chinese Periodicals Subscription List, which includes newspapers and magazines for all Ni Hao collections, is the most comprehensive list of its kind of any public library in the U.S. NAP also produces the bilingual "Ni Hao" Best Seller List, published twice a year to alert customers to recent popular publications in our collections.

"Hannara" (Korean language):

The Queens Library's Korean collection is one of the largest collections of Korean material in a public library outside of Korea. The program was formally designated "Hannara", a traditional name for Korea. The Korean collection development program has grown to include 14 branches. All Hannara collections have adult and children's books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and videotapes. CD-ROMs are also available at Douglaston.

"Namaste-Adaab" (South Asian languages):

The growth of the South Asian community prompted NAP to initiate the Namaste Adaab Collections. Currently 6 languages are represented, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Punjabi and Urdu. Each Namaste Adaab collection contains a selection of fiction, including classic and popular works, non fiction, and children's books, magazines, CDs and videos.

"Privyet" (Russian language):

The growth in the number of Russian-speaking immigrants to Queens is reflected by the increased demand for Russian language materials at the Queens Library. In order to meet the needs of Russian-speaking customers, NAP developed collections for the branches in areas where the most Russian-speaking immigrants had settled. The name Privyet, which means "greetings" in Russian, was selected as the name for the collections. Each Privyet collection contains a selection of fiction including classic and popular novels, non-fiction covering a wide range of subjects such as health, biography, history and learning English, children's books, magazines, CD's and videos.
