Resources for People with Hearing Impairments

Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)

Assistive listening devices are available at the Central Library and the branches to improve confidential communication during library transactions. If you have trouble hearing, an ALD may help by increasing the volume, changing the pitch, or screening out distracting background noise. They are compatible with hearing aids. Ask at the reference, information, or circulation desk if you would like to try one.

Closed Captioned Videos

Closed captioned videos are available at Central Library and throughout the Queens Library system to explore the library's holdings in InfoLinQ™.


Deaf Interest Videos

The Deaf Interest section of the Film & Video Division at the Central Library contains a wide variety of videos of interest to the Deaf community as well as their families and friends.


Signed Videos For Adults And Children

Videos presented in American Sign Language (ASL) for both adults and children are available in the Deaf Interest section of the Film and Video collection at the Central Library and at selected branches.


Sign Language Instructional Videos

Instructional videos are available for both American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed English (SE) to explore the library's holdings in InfoLinQ™.


Sign Language Instructional Books And Dictionaries

Sign language instructional books and dictionaries for children and adults are available at Central Library throughout the Queens Library system.

 

Sign Language Classes

American Sign Language Classes are offered at different venues. Special Services has compiled a list of venues and the list can be obtained by contacting us at (718) 990-0746 (voice) or 718-990-0809 (TTY).

TTY Loan Program

A TTY (also known as a Text Telephone) is a keyboard-like device that a deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired person can use to communicate over the telephone by typing instead of speaking. If you would like to try a TTY before you buy one or while yours is being repaired, borrow a unit from these particular locations, . TTY's are available for free for three week loan. A TTY is available for incoming and outgoing calls at the Central Library: 718-990-0809
