Get a Library Card

You may obtain a free library card if you live, work, go to school or own property in New York State. Children 12 years old and younger must have a parent or guardian who resides at the same address sign for permission to get a library card.  Most library materials may be borrowed for 21 days.

Applying for a Library Card Online (Must be 12 years or older)

Go to Online Library Card Registration.

If you are age 12 or older, you may now register online to obtain a free Queens Library Card.  Submit your completed form online and a card will be sent to you in the mail. Applying for a Library Card in person

At the Central Library, please go to the Central Circulation Services desk for assistance. At any of the Community Libraries, please ask for assistance at the circulation desk.

People, who live, work, attend school or own property in New York State may become an account holder for free. By opening an account and obtaining a card, you can borrow books, magazines, CDs, Videos, DVDs, games, and more, at all libraries throughout Queens. You may also use library computers, access free WiFi or borrow laptop computers for in-library use when available. An account holder may also access services and information online from remote locations.

REQUIRED IDENTIFICATION: We require verification of name and address information. If this application is for a child under age 12, the identification provided must be for the parent/guardian. Identification provided may not be expired. A.P.O. Box may be accepted for the mailing address if a verifiable home address is included on the application...

  • Show us any ONE of the following New York State IDs: Current driver’s license; current photo learner’s permit or current non-driver’s identification.

    -OR-

  • Show us any TWO of the following IDs with one showing your photo and the other your current address: Current employee photo ID card; NYC welfare ID card; current photo school ID; current photo college/university ID; current passport; photo Alien registration card; armed forced ID card; Medicare card; working papers; transit pass; Social Security card; birth certificate; any piece of your mail (delivered within the last three months); bank statement (within three months); check or checkbook with name and address; NYS motor vehicle registration; professional, vocational, or union photo IDs; rent bill; current rental or lease agreement; tax bill or receipt, utility bill (electric, gas); telephone bills, cell phone bills, cable bills (all within three months); current photo ID with signature & expiration date issued by an Embassy or Consulate in New York.
  • Non New York State residents who work, attend school or own property in NYS must provide appropriate documentation such as: business ID cards, school ID cards, property tax bills, or deeds.


    Obtaining a PIN (Personal Identification Number)

    Note: A PIN is required for you to use either the CALL system or My Account.

    A PIN is the acronym for "Personal Identification Number." Your library PIN is four digits in length. A PIN is necessary to use the online “My Account” feature that permits you to review the status of your account online, request items online, and renew materials online. You can also use your PIN to renew items via the telephone CALL system. A PIN is required to log on to computers in the library. You may change your PIN at any time through the “My Account” feature at www.queenslibrary.org.

    • If do not have a PIN, you may obtain one at the circulation desk of any Queens Library.  Again simply show your library card, or appropriate ID, and select a four-digit number.  
    • If you forget your PIN, you may assign a new one at the circulation desk of any Queens Library. Again, simply show your library card, or appropriate ID, and select a four-digit number.  You can also reset your own PIN if you have a valid email address on file with the library. You may do this by going to the “My Account” feature of our webpage and click on “Reset Your PIN”.
    • If you wish to change your PIN or setup e-mail notification so that you receive your library notices via e-mail, use the My Account service. For more information about My Account, see Frequently Asked Questions About My Account.

    If you do not work, live in, go to school in or own property in NYS you can obtain an out of state library card for a fee of $50.00 per year.

    How to Use Your Library Card

    You may borrow materials free from the Central Library or any of the sixty-two (62) Libraries.

    • Before leaving the library, please check your receipt for due dates of all materials you borrow. Most items may be borrowed for 21 days.
    • Best sellers, audiocassettes, CDs, magazines, and other high-demand items may be borrowed for 7 days or 21 days when applicable.
    • You may borrow a maximum of 50 items, including books, magazines, cassettes, and CDs.
    • You may return any Queens Library material to any Queens Library location.
    • With your personal identification number, you can check your library account for overdue and requested items and owed fees via the automated telephone service, Customer Account Library Line (CALL), (718) 990-8508, or online using My Account.
    • Video Materials (includes DVDs) may be borrowed for three days. For more information, see How to Borrow Video/DVD Materials.
    • All materials except Interlibrary Loan and Reference materials may be renewed up to three times. Materials that have outstanding reserves are not renewable.
