Scope & Collections

The Fine Arts and Recreation Division owns Queens’ largest collection of circulating and reference books and periodicals on art, music, theater, dance, games, photography, television and sports, in addition to an extensive circulating collection of CDs, DVDs and VCDs in its new Media Center.

Periodicals

Periodicals covering the spectrum of the Division subjects are available for 7-day loan, and they are not renewable. They may be returned to any community library in Queens. Some periodicals are online, others on microfilm. There are approximately 4,500 bound volumes, 4,000 microfilms, and 2,000 recent issues. Periodicals may not be reserved or interlibrary loaned.

The Media Center

The Media Center is located at the back of the Fine Arts and Recreation Division. It houses 60,000 audio and audio-visual materials. The Media Center has four self check-out machines, which enables customers to check out materials quickly.

The Audio Collection consists of approximately 30,000 music CDs on different genres, ranging from classical music to rap, and from popular music to jazz, in addition to gospel, show, film, and world music.

The Audio Collection also has approximately 2,000 Audio Book on CDs, including classic and contemporary novels, best-sellers, short stories, poetry, speeches, self-help, language–learning, and other non-fiction recordings.

The Audio-Visual Collection has approximately 15,000 DVDs and VCDs, on all subjects and for all ages. Items from the top of Billboard charts and multicopies of recent Academy Award winners and nominees hardly stay on the shelves for long. The Fine Arts Division welcomes you, and invites you to make frequent use of our materials. Your suggestions and support are greatly appreciated.
