More About the Family Literacy Program

Family Literacy is a nation-wide education initiative designed to promote literacy, language skills, and lifelong learning for children and their adult caregivers. The federal government defines Family Literacy services as; “Services that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration, to make sustainable changes in a family and that integrate all of the following activities: Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children, training for parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and become full partners in the education of their children, an age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life, parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency.”

The Queens Library’s Adult Learner Program presently offers two Family Literacy models to its customers:

Pre-K ESOL Family Literacy Program

This program offers English classes for parents and their pre-school age children through age-appropriate learning activities, interactive literacy activities for parents and children together, and parent resource/support time. These classes are offered in 8 to 10 week sessions at different branches of the library.

School Linked ESOL Family Literacy Program

This program offers 12 hours of instruction per week for parents and their children attending P.S. 78Q (grades K-3).
This program offers English classes for caregivers in the library and interactive literacy activities after school at  P.S. 78Q. These include homework help for both parents and children from pre-K to 3 and computer classes for adults.
This program also offers fieldtrips and a general orientation to the greater city of New York for immigrant families.
