Join Asma Gull Hasan in a discussion of her new book, American Muslims: The New Generation, which provides basic information about Islam in America - its major tenets, different sects and various ethnic groups. Ms. Hasan attempts to break through the stereotypes and generalizations, bringing to the forefront similarities between American Muslims and Americans. Copies of her book will be available for sale and autographing.

Meet Christiane Bird and discuss her fascinating new book- part travelogue, part historical inquiry, and part memoir of the early Iran she fondly remembers from her childhood to the modern Iran she revisited as an adult. Her book captures the sights, sounds, and spirits of everyday life in Iran today and uncovers truths obscured by stereotypes and misunderstandings. Ms. Bird is the author of the Jazz and Blues Lovers' Guide to the U.S. and co-author of Below the Line: Living Poor in America. Copies of her book will be available for sale and autographing.

Join in a discussion of Dr. Daniel Brumberg's latest work, Reinventing Khomeini: The Struggle for Reform in Iran, which examines the political philosophy and structure of Iran, from the era of the Ayatolla to the struggle for power unfolding in the Iran's reform movement today. Dr. Brumberg, Associate Professor of Government at Georgetown University, is the author of many articles on political and social change in the Middle East and wider Islamic world. Copies of his book will be available for sale and autographing.

Persian Art: Pre- to Post-Islamic Era
Join the Flushing Library in a celebration of Persian music and culture. At 12:00 p.m. in the Flushing Library Auditorium, accomplished artist and sculptor M.K. Sadigh will present "Persian Art: Pre to Post Islamic Era," a slide lecture examining the development of the Persian identity through history as illustrated in its art.

Politics & Prose
At 1:30 p.m. in Flushing Library's Areas A & B, journalist Christiane Bird and Dr. Daniel Brumberg will present a dialogue about Iran in terms of the link between culture, society and politics. Ms. Bird is the author of Neither East Nor West: One Woman's Journey through the Islamic Republic of Iran. Dr. Daniel Brumberg, Assistant Professor of Government at Georgetown University, is the author of Reinventing Khomeini: The Struggle for Reform in Iran.

Traditional Iranian Music
At 3:00 p.m. in the Flushing Library Auditorium, enjoy a performance of traditional Iranian music, presented by the performance group Dastgah Nava. The group consists of Shahla Nikfal and Bahram Sadeghian, performers who use traditional instruments (qanun, dombak and daf), voice and improvisation to bring forth an afternoon of virtuosity and magic.
