From Burgh to Borough

1950. Van Wyck Expressway opened, connecting Idlewild Airport with the Belt Parkway and, in 1952, with the Grand Central and Interboro Parkways.

1955. Clearview Expressway construction began, designed to connect the Throgs Neck Bridge with east-west highways in Queens and Long Island.

1955. St. John’s University, previously of Brooklyn, opened its Jamaica campus.

1955-60. Long Island Expressway opened in stages, taking over route of Horace Harding Boulevard.

1957. Construction began on the Throgs Neck Bridge. The bridge opened to full operation in 1962.
