What are the hardware requirements?

A laptop computer with a charged battery and a standard wireless network interface (NIC) card that is compatible with Wi-Fi standards "802.11b" or "802.11g". Most are.

What are the software requirements?

Set your TCP client software to obtain an IP address automatically from a server. (DHCP turned on) Install and configure TCP/IP software by opening the Network icon in the Control Panel. Under Protocol settings, add TCP/IP. Set the IP address to obtain an IP address automatically. Leave all other fields blank. Restart the laptop for the changes to take effect. In addition, it is highly recommended that all equipment have up-to-date antivirus software, Spyware protection and a personal firewall installed.

I don’t have a library card. Can I access Queens Library’s Wireless Network?

You will need a library card and a personal identification number (PIN) to log on. Please go to the Customer Service Desk if you need assistance in obtaining library card or PIN.

How do I connect to the Wireless Network?
  • Turn on your device. (It must be WiFi compatible.) Your device should automatically locate and display nearby wireless networks.
  • Choose "QBPL_WIRELESS" from the list.
  • Launch an Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. Please Note: if you are blocking pop-up windows you will need to disable it, otherwise you will not be able to connect to our network.
  • You will be prompted to enter your Queens Library Card Number and PIN. Click "Log in."
  • A small Bluesocket™ window will appear. This window must be open for you to remain on the wireless network.
  • When you are ready to exit the network, click the Logout button.
If you have never used the Queens Library Wireless Network before:

You may be asked to install a security certificate onto your computer. This authenticates your computer as part of the Wireless Network's user community. When you launch your web browser, a "Security Alert" window will pop up with three buttons: Yes, No, and View Certificate.

  • Yes: will allow you to log in to the Queens Library network. You will receive this prompt at each time you log in.
  • View Certificate: after viewing the security certificate, you will be shown the "Install Certificate" button. Once you have installed the certificate you will be able to log into the Wireless Network.
  • No: you cannot access Queens Library’s network.
Where can I get help setting up or troubleshooting my laptop?

Go to setup section for more details.

Library staff cannot provide technical assistance with your laptop or other wireless devices. Staff cannot accept the liability of handling your equipment, or guarantee that you will be able to make a wireless connection. If you need detailed assistance or information, contact the manufacturer of your laptop, computer software or wireless card.

 

What about Network Security?

The Library's wireless network is not secure, as it is any other Internet connection. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and appropriate software, within two hundred feet. When using any network connection, including wireless, it is recommended that you DO NOT enable file sharing or print sharing to aid in preventing hacker's access to your computer.

The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.

Where can I use my laptop?

You may use a laptop in any Adult or Young Adult section of the building. Laptops may not be used in the Children's area.

When is Wireless Service Available?

Wireless access is available during regular business hours, as posted in each location.

Is it possible to print from my laptop?

No. Printing is not currently possible from your laptop within Queens Library locations.

Will my laptop have access to everything available on the Internet?

Queens Library’s policy restricts access to some web site content (Federal CIPA compliance). As a wireless network user you will be restricted from chat and instant messaging.FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and POP3 (Post Office Protocol) are not available.

If you are over 17 years of age, you may request broader access by using one of the library’s public use computer workstations.

May I plug my device power cord into the library's AC outlets?

While fully charged batteries are recommended, outlets are being provided at newly-renovated libraries specifically for this purpose. At other libraries, an outlet may be available and may be used provided that the power cord does not create a fire or tripping hazard. Please check with library staff on site.

How do I protect my computer?

Using virus protection, spyware protection, a personal firewall, and other measures to protect the information on your laptop is highly recommended, and is the sole responsibility of laptop users. Above all, do not leave your laptop unattended!
