History

Queens Library for Teens is a special library dedicated to enriching the lives of teens. It is open Monday through Friday, 2:30p.m. to 6p.m. for young people ages 12 to 19. There is plenty of relaxed, comfortable seating and library materials of high interest to young adults. There are more than 70 magazine subscriptions, an anime book collection and test-prep materials. Rules about noise and snacking are more relaxed than in the “regular” library.

The library houses 48 computers, 10 printers, Wii, X-Box, Kinnect, Play station 3 and Nintendo 3ds.The professional recording studio and music editing stations allow youth to record music and receive training and perform music live. Workshops include learning protools, reasons, audio engineering skills, video production, mixing, song writing, and singing/rapping and playing the piano.

The Homework Club meets every day from 2:30-3:30 pm. Students work in small groups with staff assistance. ELA, Regents and SAT/ACT prep workshops are offered. Science, math and literature programs are a consistent part of the monthly schedule. The technology programs are offered two times per week. They include: introduction to computers, multimedia presentations and publication, web design & graphic arts, college and career survival and much more.

Job Readiness is an integral part of the Teen Library program. Programs assist youth preparing for employment. Job readiness training, workshops, programs and events include; Microsoft Office, computer boot camps, resumes and cover letters, employment and career fairs. Individual sessions are also available by appointment.

Pre-GED classes meet Monday-Thursday from 9:00am-2:00pm. The Pre-GED courses help prepare students who want to improve their skills for a better chance of success in the GED Preparation program .The program helps facilitate a smooth transition from basic skills instruction to the application of knowledge required for success on the official GED test. The Pre-GED program provides language arts, writing and reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.

At Queens Library for Teens, teens actively participate in developing the calendar of events. Several ongoing and traditional programs include: College Club, youth advisory, chess club, social media club, and health and nutrition workshops, anti gang awareness, substance awareness, healthy relationships, fashion, model railroading, sports club and much more. Annual events include: fashion shows, talent shows, culture programs, college fairs, employment and career day events.

Youth Counselors and Teen Net Mentors staff the Library for Teens, a model that has been integral to the library's success. Queens Library trains its entire public service staff to recognize that "everybody serves youth".

Queens Library for Teens opened in December 2007 in a 3,000-square-foot space, just 1- 1/2 blocks from Queens Library at Far Rockaway, in the heart of the community.
