20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill may not be your typical collection of horror short fiction. I wouldn't know, because I don't read horror fiction. I don't like being scared. But when a friend pressed the book into my hand and said I must read it, I figured I’d try it. I fell into these stories and couldn't quite crawl out. Almost missed my subway stop. As I was reading about Eddie Carroll trying to find his way out of the not haunted house, as the house becomes a maze, and he finds the mother tied up in her bed, I realized that I was going to be too scared to sleep if I didn't put the book down.
I couldn't put the book down. I didn't care. Terrifying or no, Joe Hill is a wonderful storyteller and his story about the haunted movie theater was so sweet and the characters so sympathetic.
You've been warned. You may not be able to put the book down. You may stay up all night, but the bags under your eyes will be worth it.
