How to Get a Queens Library Card

You may obtain a library card if you live, work, go to school or own property in New York State. Non- New York State residents who do not work, go to school or own property may obtain a library card for $35 (annual fee which expires yearly).Children 12 years old and younger must have a parent or guardian who resides at the same address sign for permission to get a library card. Children should also be able to write their own names. Most library materials may be borrowed for 21 days.

Applying for a Library Card

At the Central Library, please go to the Central Circulation Services counter for assistance. At any of the Branch Libraries, please ask for assistance at the circulation counter.

  • You will be asked to fill out a postcard with your address and signature.
  • The Library will mail you the postcard.
  • When you receive the postcard in the mail, please bring it to the agency where you applied along with two (2) forms of identification: one with photo or signature and one with your name and address.
  • You will be asked to fill out a short form and you will receive your new card.

When first applying for a library card, a customer has the opportunity to borrow two (2) items, if s/he presents two (2) acceptable forms of identification:

  • A valid driver's license with your current address.
  • A valid non-driver's identification card.
  • A bank or credit card statement or utility bill that is less than three months old.

Otherwise, your borrowing privileges begin when you return to the Library to register with your postcard.


Obtaining a PIN

Note: A PIN is required for you to use either the CALL system or My Account.

A PIN is the acronym for "Personal Identification Number." Your library PIN is four digits in length. The first time you access your account, your PIN will be set to the last four digits of your Queens Library card number. Or, if you have provided your Social Security Number (SSN#) and it is on file, your PIN will be set to the last four digits of your SSN#.

  • If do not have a PIN, you may obtain one at the circulation desk of any Queens Library. Simply show your library card, or appropriate ID, and select a four-digit number.
  • If you forget your PIN, you may assign a new one at the circulation desk of any Queens Library. Again, simply show your library card, or appropriate ID, and select a four-digit number.
  • If you wish to change your PIN or setup e-mail notification so that you receive your library notices via e-mail, use the My Account service. For more information about My Account, see Frequently Asked Questions About My Acount.


How to Use Your Library Card

You may borrow materials free from the Central Library or any of the sixty-two (62) Queens Library Branches.
  • Before leaving the library, please check your receipt for due dates of all materials you borrow. Most items may be borrowed for 21 days
  • Best sellers, audiocassettes, CDs, magazines, and other high-demand items may be borrowed for 7 days or 21 days when applicable.
  • You may borrow a maximum of 25 items, including books, magazines, cassettes, and CDs.
  • You may return Queens Library books and magazines to the Central Library
  • or any Queens Library Branch. All other non-print materials, such as DVDs and CDs, must be returned to the branch from which they were borrowed.
  • With your personal identification number, you can check your library account for overdue and requested items and owed fines via the automated telephone service, Customer Account Library Line (CALL), (718) 990-8508 or online using My Account.
