Juneteenth: "Black Orpheus" Film Screening with Silvana Magda

Join us for a screening of the award-winning film Black Orpheus, a retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set during the time of the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The screening features a special conversation about the film with award-winning dancer/choreographer, composer/singer/producer, and CEO Silvana Magda. The movie has influenced and inspired artists, musicians, and filmmakers worldwide, and features a groundbreaking soundtrack. Silvana Magda is an award-winning choreographer/dancer/composer/singer/producer and CEO. She was born in Salvador Bahia, Brazil, and is a part of the family that founded the 45-year-old community organization Afoxé Filhas de Gandhy. The group honors the importance of women in preserving African-based religions, and celebrates women as guardians of the sacred, promoting female empowerment and cultural diversity. She tours nationally and internationally with her nine-piece band “Katende” and “Viva Brazil Dancers.
